Thirty years ago, I was much younger than today, and collecting all LPs recorded by Gene between 1956 till his bitter end in 1971, and listening to his fantastic voice singing Rock&Roll, R&B, or Country Music tunes at a time when my teenager friends idolized Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, or The Who. Who was right, who was wrong ?

Of course, Gene did not have the charisma of Elvis, he only came second, just like Dean Martin came second to Frankie. That does not make him engaging, quite the opposite. Just listen to "Baby Blue", "You are the one" or "Am I that easy to forget". No one will ever sing like him anymore. Just like Johnnie Ray, another good example of a singer who faded in oblivion after being so influential to his followers. And what about that gang of four black-leather dressed youngsters who came from Liverpool, England, to sing at the Star Club, Hamburg, Germany, back in 1961, proudly sharing the stage with famous guest star Gene Vincent ? They also owe Gene part of their sound. The best of them four left us over 25 years ago, poor John, he would have been most qualified to confirm it.

I finally decided to buy this CD box set and did not regret it. Great value. It includes all Capitol and Columbia studio recordings, plus a few songs previously unreleased on LP ("Right Now", "Lovely Loretta", "Who's pushing your swing") and interesting alternate takes. There is only a minor drawback. Although recordings after 1960 were made for stereo, the sound engineer explains that he could not get a hold on the right tapes, therefore few tracks are available in stereo. No big deal, as he concludes "it's only all old rock & roll, enjoy it" !
