Mozart - 45 Symphonies (Adam Fischer) [12CDs] - 2014, MP3

I've only heard a few symphonies from this box so far, but I thought it would still be useful to get a review in to help potential purchasers. This is a most lively, spontaneous, well-recorded Mozart symphony set. I just heard #34, it makes Szell/Concertgebouw sound like sleep walkers. Choosing the #1 and still-early #27, it is clear that this wonderful chamber orchestra has embraced the conductor's sense of exhilaration throughout the project.

This box is NOT SACD like the single CDs released since 2007. Those singles had Fischer's excellent brief thoughts on each work which are not reprinted here - a shame because they would not have taken up much printed space in this otherwise generously produced booklet. Nothing here looks, feels, or sounds "budget." The orchestra is on their toes with a conductor who sounds excited and fresh without (usually) being utterly eccentric. It's "HIP informed" without period instruments. There are a few unexpected pauses and accelerandos, such as in the slow intro to #38, and some overly emphatic ritards at closing chords. This will jar some listeners who want to relax with works they know well. Still, despite a lot of great Mozart performances in my collection, but this set will claim my Mozart listening for quite a while.

One gripe I have is that, like with most labels, there is not enough silent time between symphonies. Only BIS seems to know that serious listeners like to enjoy a concluding chord without having to rush to stop the player before the next work starts up. Some of these CDs are short; but even if they were 81 minutes there is room for 30 more seconds of silence interspersed between the main works.
Aside from that, the world is pretty much perfect....
