On Things to Come..., Yeti blends space rock and zeuhl elements to create something original, although not totally full-grown. A basic instrumental progressive rock quartet (guitar, keyboards, bass, drums), the band shifts from dreamy space jams with long keyboard chords suspended in midair and slow-paced guitar solos to frenetic bass-heavy rhythmical passages inspired by Magma. The transitions between the two are not always happy, but the result sure is striking. Bassist Tommy Atkins is no Jannick Top, but he possesses the necessary chops to anchor the wildest sections. Keyboardist Doug Ferguson is a lot more at home within this context than in the free-form outfit Ohm, providing delicious vintage keyboard textures and organ solos. Guitarist Eric Harris quickly becomes limited, but what he can do he does with taste. Drummer Jon Teague stirs the ship. The songs on Things to Come... sound half-written, half-improvised. The latter sections tend to be overstretched, a feeling inevitably magnified by the excitement found in the written bits. In short, the recipe is promising but the meal needs to cook a few more hours. Fans of anything remotely zeuhl -- from Magma and Shub Niggurath to Happy Family and even the Ruins -- will find the music on Things to Come... interesting and new.
