The music of the Reverend Pearly Brown, a blind singer from Americus, Georgia, reaches back in time to traditional songs learned from his grandmother, who was sold as a slave and lived past the age of 100. As Charles Farmer writes in the album’s new notes, “He played what he called the holy blues with every bit of the rawness of the rural blues and every bit of the energy of the church.” While the Rev. Brown performed at the Newport Folk Festival and even Carnegie Hall, it was on the streets that he preached and played most frequently, delivering his vibrant and emotionally rich message in song. Originally released in 1975.
