There's been plenty of online chatter about this collection of slo-mo groovers, pitched-down disco edits and soft-focus midtempo deep house from Yam Who's ISM label. It's not hard to see why. It pretty much features all of the artists making their name on the slo-mo scene - Matthew Kyle, Rayko, 78 Edits, Sleazy McQueen, Heion etc - alongside familiar names pitching it down a notch or two (Yam Who, Trujillo, Ajello etc). There are some great slow house contributions, from the touchy-feely goodness of Martin Ruez' "Golden Sugar" and the low-slung stoner funk of Mr Chicago's "Bad Dub", to the snugly 80s soul/AOR flex of Magnetic Soul's "Head Over".

With his Midnight Riot compilations, Yam Who has proved to be a shrewd mover. By focusing largely on the edits-not-edits sound - where disco and electrofunk meets deep house - he's managed to catch the zeitgeist of a scene that remains hugely popular. This third volume reads like a veritable who's who of contemporary talent, featuring both well-known names (Ilya Santana, Rayko, Sleazy McQueen, Get Down Edits) and rising stars (Shit Hot Soundsystem, Jimmy The Twin, B-Jam, the excellent Stupid Human). Musically, it largely delivers what you'd expect, expertly moving between delay-laden disco dubbiness, Tiger & Woods-ish disco-house and starlight nu-boogie.

22. Colbourne - Fireflys Desire 07:28
23. Jay Ru - Toooo Late 06:30

Arriving at a fourth Midnight Riot label compilation in little over a year is no mean feat for Yam Who?'s ISM operation, and the key to their success lies in the diversity of sounds you can include within the overarching theme of nocturnal grooves. And of course the high standard of artists that contribute, with this bumper 23 track selection no different as Yam Who? call on some respected names to contribute; seeing the likes of Joey Negro, Ilya Santana, Rakyo and LTJ Experience puts you at ease as you know you are in good hands - the Negro edit of Yambee's Ballistic Brothers classic "Blacker" is a notable highlight. Yet the fact these established names don't overshadow the contributions of lesser known Midnight Riot newcomers such as Dan Butler and Caserta - indeed the latter Boston based producer provides perhaps the best example of a 'nocturnal groove' with his slow burning, beat down house cut "Get Down".

Midnight Riot, the re-edit label run by Yam Who, has returned with yet another bumper-packed installment of their all-conquering eponymous compilation series. At this stage, with all other comers demolished in their wake, each release now just seems like pure gloating on Yam Who's account, but really, with such sizzling corkers as the deliriously awesome "Being In Love" by Late Night Tuff Guy, the '80s clap-a-thon "Hot" and the shimmying freestyle of "26th St", who can blame him?

Yam Who?'s Midnight Riot label is one of the big daddies of the current nu-disco scene. Strangely the label boss doesn't seem to appear this time round but we do get the silky electro-house of Digital Human's "You're My Last Chance", the killer cyborg electro-funk of 80s Child's "Contagious" and the other-worldly deep-jacking soul of "U Know How To Love Me".

32. Midnight Riot, Vol. 8 (Death on the Balcony DJ Mix by The Dead Rose Music Company) 1:08:54

You'd struggle to find a more passionate champion of the nu-disco and re-edits scene than Yam Who. His edit-focused Midnight Riot label does a great job in spotting and showcasing talent. Somewhat predictably, this eighth installment in the label's self-titled compilation series is another winner. It features some 31 tracks, plus a bonus mix from the Dead Rose Music Company, and bristles with the kind of floor-friendly material that blurs the boundaries between electrofunk, nu-disco, house, funk, soul and, of course, straight-up disco. Given the sheer scale of the collection, picking highlights is tough, but look out for some urgent boogie business from Rayko, a dose of spinetingling, sax-laden sweetness from Goldboy, and a live bass and vintage synthesizer rinse-out from Fran Deeper and James Rod.
